Second time I read this book. loved it the first time and loved it this time, too. We recently had some devastating wildfires here in Lake County, California which is what caused me to re-read this book. The courage and heroic actions of firefighters is awesome and as told in this book makes me salute them even more. Add to that Nevada Barr's signature murder mystery and the suspense and you have a good read.
At her best, Barr builds realistic characters within an impossible situation. The reader can't help but sympathize with the main character as she tries to figure out who has committed murder while deployed in "shake and bake" tents during a firestorm. Stranded in the firestorm's aftermath, with helicopter-stopping fog and dropping temperatures, the small group of firefighters must rely on each other for survival--even though each one knows that there is a murderer to fear.... Barr's characterization is at its best, while the twists in plot keep readers on the edge of their seats!
Anna Pigeon, Park Ranger, has been called to Northern California's Lassen Volcanic Park to fight a blaze of suspicious origin. Danger exists in the air she breathes and the exhaustion that takes a toll on all firefighters that have been brought in to save the park.
Nevada Barr convincingly shows why rangers are called from many locations and the need to work as one in the midst of a Firestorm. The problem in working as one is that there is a murderer who has no compunction about covering up the first death with more. The most intense scene is when the Firestorm is blasting down the trail and the only way to survive is as dangerous as the fire itself.
Ms. Barr is a great storyteller who writes what she knows. I have no doubt that she has experienced survival in various parks and on a myriad of projects. She brings with her the full power that a writer can when she has lived the events--perhaps not the murder itself, but survival in it rawest form.
Entertaining but ultimately unsatisfying when you add up the pieces. Why a park ranger would conduct a murder investigation while stranded in the woods with 7 others and a murderer when help was a mere day or two away is beyond me. Leave well enough alone until rescue arrives, then conduct an investigation, which avoids accusing folks you are stranded with in the woods. The ending left much to be desired as to Anna's own rescue.
I would call Nevada Barr one of the more florid authors. Her prose is sometimes a little too colorful but is nicely offset by her use of "down home" metaphors and euphemisms. Unlike James Lee Burke, who is the clear master of prose in this genre, but will leave you pulling your hair out as he takes a page and a half to follow a spider down a wall with no purposeful connection to the story.
I also like that Ms Barr is letting our heroine age gracefully. Maybe sometimes not so gracefully. Oh, and had the author been anonymous, I never would have guessed that she was female.
I had heard about Nevada Barr's series of mysteries set in National Parks and decided to start with this one because it was set in Lassen National Park where I have spent some time. It was an enjoyable read, but I suspect a rather unusual setting. It is set among a group of wildfire fighters who become stranded during a firestorm, and the mystery unfolds in that context. A lot of the story is devoted to the survival techniques required by the firefighters, and the mystery of the murder itself is not terribly profound. I was more interested in the shifting dynamics among the small group of not-quite-compatible firefighters than in solving the murder. I do think I will read more in the series to see how Barr works with the Anna Pigeon character in more conventional situations.
All Nevada Barr books are smart, well-written, carefully crafted mysteries with well-developed characters, descriptions the reader actually WANTS to read, clever dialogue, many potential suspects, and more than one potential solution. Beyond that, the reader learns a great deal about life in the National Park system and the various parks in which the mysteries are set. Even better, she keeps the reader thinking about social issues, but as an underlying thread running through the plots, rather than blatant and distracting pronouncements. Nevada Barr books are intelligent mysteries with substance and Firestorm is one of my favorites. The cast of characters (suspects) is isolated and one of them had to have done it, which makes it similar to Christie's Murder on the Orient Express. A classic puzzle! Given the potential for grand scale action (wildfires), the complexity of the plot, and the intriguing cast of characters, I just wonder ... why has no one made a movie from this book?!
