Provides a good look into long rang recon. Though it cold bring danger I as a Marine officer retired often consider it to be safer looking for the enemy rather than having him find you while tromping the bush with a platoon or more. And the tools recon had at its disposal could bring much destruction to the enemy we fought.
I served in this unit 4-69 to 4-70. Read it in 2 days .
I am not a reader that reads reflections from military anything...ever. I ended up reading this book and was disappointed when it ended! I was so sucked into the people and the surroundings that I couldn't put it down and finished the book in a long evening read. I suffered the lack of sleep hangover the next day and knew it was worth it. For me, being I am not of that generation, I enjoyed reading the history, the lessons, and the growing up while being in a place and time that is chaotic and dangerous. I really enjoyed the lack of boasting, blood and gore or details that would have pulled from the overall experience. It was written in a perfect way which engaged me, made me chuckle more than once, made me feel sad appropriately and scared...in other words I was drawn in and was involved. Well done and really a great read for any generation!
It is very interesting to read about the LRRP's. They seem to be a forgotten soldier of the Vietnam era, yet their skills are taught to todays special forces.
This is the best book I have read in a long time. Jim Seymour gives you the feeling of being there. His experience and heroism is second to none!! This book makes me proud to be an American!! It leaves you spell bound to the point that I had a hard time putting it down. I hope I speak for the entire country when I say God Bless you Jim, and God Bless America!!! First half of book was HS to Vietnam/Army transition....but the second half of the book was all about the patrolling that made the LRRP's such a powerful weapon. I have just about everything on the LRP/LRRP/Rangers in Vietnam....a must read just for the research info. A fast read, about 1 1/2 hours, and good insight into patrolling....not as action packed as Six Silent Men and others by Ivy Books.
I think I've read every book written about LRP/Rangers in Vietnam, and there have been quite a few. Some were great, some were good, all were written from the heart. The latest work, In The Jungle, by Jim Seymour is one of the great one. Although much of Jim's story is about his first tour with the 1st Cavalry Division serving in a commo section, it sets up Jim's ultimate decision to extend his time in Nam to serve in the Cav's outstanding LRP/Ranger unit. Jim's subsequent stint of 18 months pulling long range reconnaissance patrols is an accomplishment that few of us who served in that capacity achieved. Jim's 50 missions is not a record, but a ranks right of there with the leaders. Needless to say, 50 deep penetration patrols behind enemy lines is pushing the envelope and close calls are bound to occur. Jim experience his share of them and shares them with the reader in a fashion that demonstrates both his professionalism and his humility. Not one to boast of his achievements, the author still manages to relate the skills that kept him and his teammates alive while "camping with the enemy". I'll not take up this space to share these stories because this book deserves to be read in its entirety, them read again to relish the realism and spine-tingling adventures of Seymour and his comrades, so you'll have to purchase the book and enjoy it yourself. You won't regret it. An outstanding addition to anyone's special ops library.
