I read the Camber series as a kid, and loved the books. Over the years I lost a few of them, or lent them out never to be returned. I now have a 13 yr old son who reads voraciously. He was looking for a more challenging read. I remembered these from my childhood, and bought the Legends of Camber of Culdi series for him. Of course I get to read them first. There is a heavy religious overtone to these books, but not in a bad way. The books combine priests and bishops with earls, nobles, and kings, all in a setting reminiscent of the middle ages. There is political intrigue, strong character development, and a dash of magic thrown in. My son has already told me they are what he was looking for, definitely a more challenging read. For anyone who loves fantasy books with great character development, I highly recommend the Legends of Camber of Culdi series.

I was really disappointed with the Camber books -- they are cluttered, hard to read, and often dull and I finally gave up half way through the second one. Kurtz has written some other books that are much better.
I read this series a long time ago and really enjoyed it. There is mystery, and action and even some romance.
I have had the paperback versions of all the Camber/Deryni books for years and have been waiting impatiently for them to come out on . These are a great read. I recommend all of Katherine Kurtz's Camber/Deryni books if you have a love of past times, romance, intrigue, and adventure!

I've loved these books since I was a teen and had to grab them up when a version was available. I am certainly enjoying re-reading the series.
I have been a fan of the Deryni series of books since the late 1970's, when the first one appeared. Now, forty years later, I am thoroughly enjoying rereading the entire series from start to most current. I love mysteries but more so science fiction. The author creates an alternative world with 2 primary races of being, one human and one human with some magical abilities. All is set in a Middle Ages style time period complete with Kings, Knights, Bishops and pawns. The books are the story of the royal Haldane family, their highs and lows and how the land they ruled was effected by both human and Deryni personages throughout their history. The author develops a wonderful realm that is both familiar and a little mysterious due to the magical abilities of the Deryni characters. A wonderful read.
This review is really for all 3 of the books in this trilogy; I tend to gulp them down, one after the other. This is my 3rd or 4th rereading. I love all the Deryni books, but these 3 are particularly beautiful. Katherine Kurtz writes the most beautiful, touching and mystical rituals. I've sometimes wondered if they are as moving to someone who doesn't have the experience of Roman Catholic rites (especially in Latin). On the other hand, are they as thrilling to someone who hasn't studied magical ritual?
Kurtz' blending of the two just feels so right. And then combined with action, intrigue, memorable characters and the Medieval/fantasy setting... I can't get enough.
